Overview

Costa Rica grants investor residence to foreigners who invest at least US$200,000 in real estate, a business, company shares or securities registered in their name, or US$100,000 in an approved reforestation project. The reduced US$150,000 threshold under Law 9996 expired on 14 July 2026.

Applications take around 6–12 months. Residents need to spend just one day a year in Costa Rica, can apply for permanent residence after three years and citizenship after seven.
